From the Periodic Table we can tell that Chlorine (Cl) is a non-metal and will form a negative ion (called an anion).

We can also see that Cl is in Group 7A (also called Group 17). Elements in Group 7A form ions with a negative one charge.

By convention we just write a negative sign instead of -1.
