Hint for Naming FeCl3

Metal (Fe) + Non-metal (Cl) = Binary Ionic

But ... Fe is a transition metal, so ...
  • Name the metal as it appears on the Periodic Table.
  • Name the non-metal (Chlorine) by replacing the ine with ide.
  • Look at the chemical formula to find the charge for Fe. Since Cl has an ionic charge of -1, and we have three Cl atoms, Fe will have to have a charge of +3 (so the net charge for the compound is zero). To show that we write (III) after the name for Fe.
